Mango

61 × 61 cm

A mango pressing down on a plastic bag that wants to lift into the wind.

A mango holds a thin plastic bag to the ground, keeping it from the wind. Soft, sweet, harmless — and behind it the memory of a farmer's limp, feet reshaped by years of standing in soil. Before any fruit reaches a table it has passed through a body, a labour, a land, and often a quiet suffering.

Beneath the sweetness sits the hardness of what made it grow. Given in relief and weighted with jade, the fruit carries that hardness where the eye can't miss it: sweetness with the cost still attached.
